All St. Dominic Savio clubs and activities exist to support the development of the whole person.
ACADEMIC
Model United Nations (Model UN) Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. While playing their roles as ambassadors, student “delegates” make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure – all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world. Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in a Model UN simulation, students research the issue that their committee will address. Model UN participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization. Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, goals and foreign policies of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, culture, economics and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulation when the role playing gets under way. The delegates’ in-depth knowledge of their countries guarantees a lively and memorable experience.

Mentor Program We believe that one of the most important characteristics we can impart to our students is the idea of Servant Leadership. The St. Dominic Savio Catholic High School Mentor Program was created with this idea in mind. Through the Mentor Program our students will be able to put this characteristic into use. Over a two week period, any student in the Mentor Program will serve at Holy Family Catholic School as an assistant in an assigned classroom between four and five times. The St. Dominic Savio students will work closely with the classroom teacher and students in hopes of positively effecting the learning environment. All students will receive a grade for their participation in the Mentor Program. Students will be required to meet with Mr. Motto on a regular basis. They will also be required to keep a weekly journal on their experience. Students will be evaluated by their supervising teacher two times each quarter (four each semester). At the end of the semester, each student is required to give a five – seven minute presentation on their experience and how they grew during their time at Holy Family Catholic School. .5 credits. Prerequisite: None. Offered in the fall and spring semesters. (Sophomores and Juniors ONLY)
Student Ambassadors This group is very important as they are the face of St. Dominic Savio during Open House events and other community events. They work as tour guides and ambassadors for the school. These students also act as hosts for any student who comes to St. Dominic Savio for a shadow day.
Student Senate The Student Senate is St. Dominic Savio’s student government group. The Senate is made up of a cabinet (5 students) and class representatives (five students from each grade) for a total of 25 members. This group’s main responsibility is to address the wants and needs of the student body, and to act as a liaison between the students, the faculty, and the administration. Positions on the Senate are decided through an election process that occurs each spring.

Robotics The St. Dominic Savio “Iron Eagles” Robotics team is open to students from all grade levels who are interested in exploring robotics and engineering in a hands-on team environment. The team is coached by two engineers, Michael Butler and Alex Thurlow, with assistance from several parents. We participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge program (see www.usfirst.org for more details), which strives to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in an exciting, “sports tournament”-type of competition. Each season, a new game is announced in September, and the team meets regularly to design, build, program, and test a robot to compete in this game. Competitions between teams begin in January and culminate in the World Championships held in April/May. In its first year, the Iron Eagles reached the semi-finals of the 2010 Alamo FTC Regional Tournament, and in 2011, they won the Southwest FTC Regional Tournament and are invited to compete in the 2011 FTC World Championship in April.
Savio Sisters Program Savio Sisters is open to current 10th, 11th and 12th grade girls. In this club, the girls at Savio get to hang out with one another outside of the classroom. Our popular event in the spring is the Savio Sister Sleepover. This is an all-night event where girls get to grow in their faith and learn to be holy women of God at school, at home, and with friends. In high school, peers have such a strong influence on who we become and the decisions they will make, so together, we can support one another in making good decisions and growing in friendship and in faith. Not to mention we have a LOT of fun doing so – who doesn’t love staying up all night at school playing games, eating snacks, watching movies, talking and hanging out with one another!
Yearbook Yearbook is offered during the school year as a 1 credit class. Please visit the Technology Department page for more information about the yearbook course.
