MISSION
It is our belief that learning another language makes a person more well-rounded and cosmopolitan. The World Language teachers strive to enrich the education of our students with knowledge of the language, its grammar and vocabulary. We also seek to broaden the horizons of our students through the study of culture, history, literature, and geography.

    SPANISH

    WL 111  |  Spanish I (1.0 credit)
    This class is the first level of high school Spanish. Beginning-level grammar and vocabulary are taught, as well as basic reading and writing skills in Spanish. In addition, the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries are taught: their history, art, music, and cuisine. Students will work on reading and writing as well as increase their communication skills in everyday conversational language suitable for this level. As much as possible, Spanish will be used in the classroom.
    Finally, our Catholic faith will be incorporated as much as possible in our lessons, and students will learn Catholic prayers such as the Hail Mary, the Our Father, and the Glory Be, among others.

    WL 112  |  Pre-AP Spanish I  (1.0 credit)
    Prerequisite: Previous Spanish experience or a better than average score on the language section of the HSPT.
    This course description is the same as the Spanish I course listed above.  The Pre-AP level however demands a deeper understanding and faster processing for success.  The Pre-AP course will move quicker and complete more projects throughout the year.

    WL 211  |  Spanish II (1.0 credit)
    Prerequisite: Spanish I
    This course is the second level of high school Spanish. It assumes a basic knowledge of beginning-level Spanish. Intermediate-level grammar and vocabulary are taught, as well as intermediate reading and writing skills in Spanish. In addition, the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries are taught: their history, art, music, and cuisine. As much as possible, Spanish will be used in the classroom. Finally, our Catholic faith will be incorporated as much as possible in our lessons, and students will learn Catholic prayers such as the Hail Mary, the Our Father, and the Glory Be, among others.

In addition, the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries are taught: their history, art, music, and cuisine.     Prerequisite: Pre-AP Spanish II or Spanish II and a Teacher recommendation
    This course description is the same as the Spanish III course listed above.  The Pre-AP level however demands a deeper understanding and faster processing for success.  The Pre-AP course will move quicker and complete more projects throughout the year.

    WL 411 |  Spanish IV (1.0 credit)

    WL 412 |  AP Spanish Language (1.0 credit)
    Prerequisite:  High achievement in Spanish III and Teacher recommendation
    Spanish IV AP is equivalent to a third year college course. The students will study literature and poetry of well-known Hispanic authors including Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez , Pablo Neruda, and others. By increasing their vocabulary through literature and literary articles students are much better equipped to do research, write essays over the findings, and give oral presentations. Advanced grammar will also be emphasized. Students will discuss political issues as well as write essays using various sources as a base. Their oral proficiency is a key component to the course and will be emphasized in simple conversation as well as in profound opinions and concepts. At the end of this course students will be proficient in communicating on an advanced level both orally and in writing. They will have an initial understanding of the style of writing of Hispanic authors and will be able to compare the differences culturally through the literature.

    LATIN

    FL 122 |  Pre-AP Latin I (1.0 credit)
    Prerequisite: None
    This course is the first level of high school Latin. Beginning-level grammar and vocabulary are learned, as well as basic reading and writing skills in Latin. In addition, the cultures of Classical Antiquity (Greece and Rome) and Medieval Western Europe, their history, art, and music, are studied. Students will work on reading and writing as well as increase their communication skills in everyday conversational language suitable for this level. Latin is used as much as possible in the classroom, but English will be used when necessary.
    The unique relationship Latin has with English will also be emphasized so that the students will increase their English vocabulary through their study of Latin.
    The Catholic faith will be incorporated in our lessons, and students will learn Catholic prayers such as the Hail Mary, the Our Father, and the Glory Be, among others. Students will read stories from the Catholic as well as the Classical tradition. 

    FL 222  |  Pre-AP Latin II (1.0 credit)
    Prerequisite: Latin I
    This class is the second level of high school Latin. Intermediate-level grammar and vocabulary are learned, as well as further reading and writing skills in Latin. In addition, the cultures of Classical Antiquity (Greece and Rome) and Medieval Western Europe are studied: their history, art, and music. Students will work on reading and writing as well as increase their communication skills in conversational language suitable for this level. Latin is used as much as possible in the classroom, but English will be used when necessary.

    FL 322  |  Pre-AP Latin III (1.0 credit)
    Prerequisite: Latin II
    This class is the third level of high school Latin and will be offered for the first time in the 2011–2012 school year. Advanced-level grammar and vocabulary and introductory literary and philological study are learned, as well as further reading and writing skills in Latin. In addition, the cultures of Classical Antiquity (Greece and Rome) and Medieval Western Europe are studied: their history, art, and music. Students will work on reading and writing as well as increase their communication skills in conversational language suitable for this level. Latin is used as much as possible in the classroom, but English will be used when necessary.
    This course will also prepare students either to continue with Latin IV, Advanced Placement Latin, or to take either the SAT II Latin Subject Examination or the placement examination used by the colleges they will attend. 
    The unique relationship Latin has with English will also be emphasized so that the students will increase their English vocabulary through their study of Latin.
    The Catholic faith will be incorporated in our lessons, and students will learn Catholic prayers. Students will read stories from the Catholic as well as the Classical tradition.
