“On Saturday afternoon the Savio boys soccer team improved their district record to 4-3, coasting to a comfortable 4-1 victory over San Juan Diego. Matthew French’s score off an Austin McCourt cornerkick midway through the first half put Savio on the board first. Soon thereafter, Ryan Johnson scored on a penalty kick after a San Juan Diego foul in the box, and then another Austin McCourt corner kick found Wayne Lee for Savio’s 3rd score. At the half Savio was up 3-0, outshooting San Juan Diego 20 shots to 1, with Savio’s defense (Matthew French sweeper, Thomas Weis stopper, Thomas Le and Zach Ortiz outside backs) shutting the opponents down completely until a defensive lapse midway through the 2nd half allowed San Juan Diego to score their only goal of the night. Ryan Johnson scored an insurance goal off a pass from Andrew Nazareth late in the game to make the final score 4-1. Luke Rivas allowed one goal and had 3 saves.
For this last home game of the season, Savio honored the three seniors on the team: midfielder Evan Rivas who has played soccer at Savio since it started (all three years), leading scorer Ryan Johnson (midfielder and goalie), and newcomer Alexander Sanabria (defender).
Savio’s final district game will be 5pm Wednesday at Regents.”- Parent volunteer, Steve French

Both the Girls and Boys soccer teams dominated against Brentwood Thursday, resulting in the first hat trick of the season for both teams. Bailey Hallberg scored for the girls and Ryan Johnson for the boys.
Girls: “The Lady Eagles took on Brentwood Christian Thursday afternoon and came back home with a VICTORY! The game was at a slow start but in the first half Senior Bailey Hallberg put one in the net. Second half, both teams were getting more and more aggressive as the time ticked away. Hallberg was fouled in the penalty box resulting in a PK and a second goal for Savio. A few moments later, Sophmore Lauren Johnson put one in, assisted by Bailey Hallberg’s corner kick. As each teams determination was showing, there was another foul against Savio. Bailey took the free kick and sunk another goal. Savio up by 4, Brentwood was determined to get on the score. The score came to be 4-2, Savio worried about Brentwood scoring anymore but were able to hold their own and keep the win. Goal keeper Myndi Riddle made multiple saves to keep Brentwood out of the race for the win.” – Coach White
Boys: “The Savio boys soccer team evened its district record to 3-3 with a commanding 8-1 victory over Brentwood Christian Thursday night. After a slow start, a sharply angled shot from the corner by Ryan Johnson, and a long run by Austin McCourt onto a beautiful pass by Calvin Nazareth put Savio up 2-0. With Savio piling on the goals, Coach Barrera was able to rest many of the starters in the second half. Ryan Johnson got the boys first hat trick of the season. Austin McCourt added two goals and three assists. Calvin Nazareth added a goal and two assists. Josh Baehl and Thomas Weiss also added goals; Wayne Lee, Juan Jose Guevera and Andrew Nazareth with assists. Throughout the game Savio’s improved passing was obvious, wearing down Brentwood. Luke Rivas had 10 saves in goal, allowing one goal. Collin Kerr came in for the last 16 minutes and got two saves, including the most difficult one of the night.
With victories in its last two games, Savio would have a chance at second place in district. Savio next hosts San Juan Diego Saturday at 3:00.” – Parent Volunteer, Steve French

“Six freshmen and (sophomore) Stephen Harden from the JV team traveled to Lake Travis to face their Freshman B team and came out victorious with a 39-37 score. Stephen Harden pulled down 9 rebounds and Dominic Kress with 7 to contribute to the team’s 30 rebound effort. Schyler Hallberg and Dominic Kress pitched in 8 points a piece with Miguel Rodriguez having the leading score with 11. It was a tight game throughout and both teams were very solid on defense. We had to execute under pressure. These close games are great growing experiences for all involved and we definitely grew together through adversity. The JV will be back in action Tuesday night at Brentwood Christian.” – Coach Alvarez
Next up: Both Girls and Boys JV and Varsity play @ Brentwood Christian Tue, Jan 24.

A study by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops revealed that 98 percent of young adult Catholics in their 20s and 30s consider themselves “spiritual, but not religious.” Only 8% participate in a Catholic parish community. What will happen to your son or daughter? Will they continue to embrace their Catholic faith when they question its relevance in their lives?
Saint William Catholic Church cordially invites you and your teens to an exciting evening with best-selling Catholic author and motivational speaker, Matthew Kelly, as he takes on the hard issues facing Catholics and challenges us to rediscover the relevance of Catholicism to our culture today.
Come be inspired and energized on Sunday, Jan 29 @ 7:00pm at St. William Catholic Church. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.

JV Boys and both Boys and Girls Varsity teams dominated their games against Temple Central Texas Christian on Tuesday night.
JV Girls: “Savio started off strong controlling the tempo of the game during the first quarter. The Eagles shooting went cold and they struggled to maintain the lead. They made a comeback in the 4th quarter but it was not enough for the win. Savio lost 20-29.” – Coach Bailey
JV Boys: “The JV boys were successful in another district outing as they downed Temple Central Texas Christian by a score of 60-16. This game was another exhibition of good shooting as the team combined for shooting 50% from the floor. Schyler Hallberg poured in 5 three-pointers and finished with a season high 21 points on the night. Brian McNaughton and Miguel Rodriguez both made good contributions to the team’s 23 total rebounds. The JV will suit out the freshmen to play against the Lake Travis freshman team on Wednesday night in a non-district match-up.” – Coach Alvarez
Varsity Girls: “Savio Lady Eagles came out ready to play leading 16-3 at halftime. Quality passing and forced turnovers by our half court trap pushed the lead to 31-13. The Ladies went on to win 62-46, led by Jenna Minor’s 22 points. Abigail Moses had 16 followed by 10 points from Ana Mooney, 8 from Erionna Brown, and 6 from Krystin Nanez. Savio girls are 5-1 in district play. They face district rival Brentwood on the road on Tuesday. Come support the Lady Eagles as the avenge their previous loss.” – Coach Bailey
Varsity Boys: “The undefeated Eagle boys ran their district mark to 7-0 as they decimated Central Texas Christian, 74-12. CTCS only scored five baskets for the night, fell behind 18-0 in the first quarter and managed only one field goal in the first half. Every Eagle team member played at least one quarter with 12 of 13 scoring. Savio was led by Cole Korte’s 11 points and 10 points by freshmen Kevin Owens off the bench. Savio’s smothering defense kept it from being a game early on and helps to keep the momentum as St. Dominic runs its overall state-ranked record to 16-5. The next home game will be Thursday at 5:30pm against a surprising Giddings State school team. Show your support by packing the house!” – Coach Jernberg

Both the boys and girls soccer teams competed Monday night and came up short.
Girls: “The Lady Eagles outplayed Austin’s Regents on Monday evening. The lady’s played a strong first half, but weren’t able to put one in the net. Regents scored 1 goal in the first half with seconds to go. Second half the lady’s had multiple shots, but just weren’t able to finish. Regents ended the second half with 2 additional goals. The final score was 0-3.” – Coach White
Boys: “Monday night the Savio Boys soccer team lost 2-6 at an away game against an experienced San Marcos Baptist Academy team (4-1 district, 8-3 overall). San Marcos dominated early on with great passing, and scored two goals on Savio goalie Ryan Johnson, finding their striker with a pass over our defense for an easy first goal, and soon after hitting a perfect shot that grazed the far right of the crossbar for the second goal. Eleven minutes into the game Johnson moved to midfield (bringing Collin Kerr in as keeper) to try to generate more chances.
Settling down, Savio worked hard to keep up with San Marcos’s experienced midfield. Austin McCourt hit a shot just over the crossbar, and then a few minutes found Ian Sequeira open inside the box but his shot was stopped by the San Marcos keeper. Later Sequeira made a strong run down the right side and was fouled, pulled down by a San Marcos defender outside the box. Johnson’s direct kick went to Josh Baehl whose shot struck the crossbar for Savio’s best chance of the first half. San Marcos picked up two more goals in the half including an impressive shot to the upper 90.
Savio played a better second half. Matthew French coming up from defense was fouled on two long dribbling runs. A long shot by Andrew Nazareth was stopped by their keeper. Finally, Austin McCourt’s corner kick found Matthew French open at the far post who put it past the keeper for Savio’s first score. Later in the half Savio appeared to be coming back as Ryan Johnson’s cross found Austin McCourt at the top of the circle for Savio’s second score. Another excellent corner kick by McCourt found Matthew French again, but his header hit the post. San Marcos put the game away with two insurance goals in the second half. In goal Ryan Johnson had 5 saves (in the first 10 minutes) and Collin Kerr had 10. Josh Baehl had 5 shots on goal.” – Parent Volunteer, Steve French
