GAME RECAP and SEASON SUMMARY
Game RECAP from Coach Short:
“The Savio softball team played for the 3A TAPPS State Championship Friday at University Mary Hardin Baylor facing Sacred Heart Halletsville. Savio came out swinging in the top of the 1st inning as usual. After leadoff freshman Victoria Rivera grounded out to SS; junior Liz Sanchez hit a stand up double to left; freshman Jordan Brannam came up and hit a single to right moving Sanchez over to 3B; junior Anna Carter laid down a bunt that scored Sanchez and the Lady Eagles had their first run of the game; junior Katarina Rivera flew out to left to end the top of the inning. The leadoff hitter for Halletsville flew out to Fumagalli in right; followed by a ground out to Brannam at 2B; then an error on Kee at 3B allowed the first Halletsville runner on; however the next batter flew out to Sanchez in foul territory ending any threat by the home team.”
“In the top of the 2nd inning sophomore Ashlee Keeley came up and hit a stand up double to lead the inning off; junior Emily Kee laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Keeley over to 3B; sophomore Jennifer Martin came up and laid down a drag bunt and when Keeley tried to score she was thrown out at the plate by pitcher Klimitcheck of Halletsville haulting any momentum gained by Savio; freshman Fumagalli came up and struck out ending the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd inning Halletsville came out swinging when Kossa hit a ball to center, then stole 2nd and 3rd and eventually scored on a passed ball by catcher V Rivera; K Rivera got the next batter to ground out to herself, to Brannam at 2B, and then struck out the last batter faced to end the inning.”
“In the 3rd inning V Rivera led off with a double but consecutive fly outs by Sanchez, Brannam, and Carter ended any momentum started by Rivera. In the bottom of the 3rd inning Halletsville started off with a double to left by their 9th batter; which advanced to 3B on a Sacrifice bunt by their leadoff; and then scored on a sharp single to left by their 2nd batter. Savio’s defense and K Rivera settled down on the mound, striking out the next batter and getting the last out of the inning on a ground out to Sanchez at SS. In the 4th inning both Savio and Halletsville went 3 up, 3 down with no runs scored.”
“In the top of the 5th inning is when Savio showed their heart starting with a single by sophomore Jennifer Martin; followed by a BB by Fumagalli. When V Rivera came up she tied the game with a RBI to left that scored Martin but Fumagalli got thrown out at 3B making the first out of the inning. Sanchez came up and hit a single to left advancing Rivera to 3B and then on the first pitch to the next batter Sanchez stole 2B. With runners at 2B and 3B Brannam hit a ball up the middle that scored Rivera and left Sanchez on 3B and Brannam on 1B; Brannam stole 2B and then Carter hit a ball to SS that she could not handle which resulted in Sanchez scoring. K Rivera came up and knocked in Brannam; which was followed by Keeley knocking in Carter; Kee came up and grounded out to 3B ending the inning but not before Savio had taken a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 5th Halletsville got 1 run back, again by their 9th hitter scoring on consecutive hits given up to left which made the game score 6-3 after 5 innings.”
“In the top of the 6th inning Martin tried to get on with her patented drag but eventually struck out. Fumagalli came up and had her best hit of the season to right field; which was followed by V Rivera’s 3rd hit of the game giving Savio 2 runners on and 1 out. Sanchez came up and delivered her 3rd hit of the game also but a base running error by Rivera resulted in the 2nd out of the inning. The inning ended with a strikeout by Brannam. In the bottom of the 6th inning and looking for 6 outs K Rivera and the defense buckled down; Rivera struck out the first batter; she got the 2nd batter to ground out to herself and the 3rd batter flew out to Sanchez at SS.”
“In the top of the 7th inning Savio looking for insurance runs got one when Carter led off and ripped a ball to left field; followed by a hit by K Rivera that advanced Carter to 3B; then Keeley came up and flew out to right field but could not score Carter; so with 2 on and 1 out Kee came up and laid down a sacrifice that scored Carter to give Savio another run; Martin came up and struck out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 7th Halletsville needed runs and it looked like they might get their first one when their leadoff hit a shot to left but Martin, probably still upset at her last at bat, tracked the ball perfectly and caught it for the first out of the inning. The next batter belted the first pitch to center and when the next batter was walked Halletsville had the making of a comeback with runners on 2B and 3B with only 1 out. This is when “Kat” Rivera showed the attitude she has displayed all season, she calmly struck out the next batter on 4 pitches creating the 2nd out of the inning and then with the state championship on the line struck out the next batter on 3 consecutive pitches. The final score was 7-4 and it gave not only the Softball Lady Eagles their first State Championship but Savio’s first State Championship in athletics.” – Coach Short
SEASON SUMMARY:
“This season was about taking steps (12 to be exact) and the girls were reminded that along the way we would play some good ball and some very good teams to get us ready for playoffs. Last year this team scored their fair share of runs but gave up a ton of runs with very little defense to show. Our goal this year was to shore up the defense and make it really solid behind a good pitching staff; to really improve on the offense with power; to be able to play small ball; and to aggressively run the bases. This team led the entire high school nation (public and private) in stolen bases and it wasn’t even close. We also had many individual leaders on the offensive side of the ball in batting average, OB %, slugging %, etc. I could not be more proud of the ladies and Coach Allen and the way they bought in to the philosophy that was demanded of them. They accepted the challenges and responded by winning the ultimate prize as a high school student/athlete; a state championship!” – Coach Short
