The boys JV and Varsity teams played Milano High School away last night while the Lady Eagles vied against Austin Regents at home.

Boys JV: Coach Alvarez -  “The last time we faced a team that was exceptionally quick and physical, we came out on the short end with a loss to San Marcos Academy. This time, against Milano, we matched their energy level and it carried us to a win. Our defense was great in the first half and even better in the second; Chase Anthony and Felix Martinez forced a couple of turnovers in the 4th quarter that secured the lead for Savio. Rebounding was a joint effort by Kevin Owens, Josh MacKay, and Stephen Harden down the stretch of the game. Schyler Hallberg and Felix Martinez fueled the scoring with a barrage of 3 pointers. The JV moves into district play with a 6-3 overall record and plans to build toward success in preparation for Waco Texas Christian on January 3rd.”

Boys Varsity: Coach Jernberg – “The Savio Eagles traveled to state-ranked class A Milano last night and were defeated 28-55 in a cold-shooting night for St. Dominic.  Starting slow against taller opponents, the Eagles were unable to get on track through most of the first half.  Cole Korte was the only player with more than 6pts. as he tallied 16 for the night.  The victory moved Milano to 13-1 and dropped the Eagles to 10-3.”

Next up is the Bracken Christian Christmas Tournament in San Antonio with the first contest Wed, Dec 28 @ 5:00 against San Marcos Hill Country.

Girls Varsity defeated Austin Regents 62-46.  Next up,  Girls JV will play Stony Point on Tue, Dec 20 @ 5:30 and Girls Varsity plays @ 7:00.

Both the Boys and Girls soccer teams competed against St. Stephen’s last night.

After coming from 2 goals down to tie, the Savio boys soccer team lost an exciting game 2-3. St. Stephen’s drilled a strong shot off the inside of the post to score the winning goal late in the game.   St. Stephen’s scored at the beginning of each half to pull ahead 0-2, but midway through the second half Kevin Le put in Savio’s first goal off a rebound from an Evan Rivas shot.   Later, on a long throw in, Calvin Nazareth was able to find Ryan Johnson open behind the St. Stephen’s defense, and Ryan scored to tie the game.   With time about to run out, and Savio trying to find the tying goal, St. Stephen’s was called for a foul.  Ryan Johnson’s direct kick found Calvin Nazareth in the box, who was pulled down as he shot.   Matthew French  just missed wide on the rebound of Calvin’s shot as time expired.  Luke Rivas played a strong game in goal with 9 saves.

The Savio Lady Eagles have put their first win under their belt for the season. The ladies got off to an early start ending the first half 1-0 with a goal by Bailey Hallberg. St Stephen’s answered back with a nice goal tying it 1-1. The Eagles held on, pulling away with a goal by Lauren Johnson from about 35 yards out making it 2-1. The game was sealed by Hallberg’s free kick sailing into the goal with only minutes left in the game. The girls played their heart out and won 3-1.

Savio JV Eagles played in the Cedar Park JV Tournament Thursday and Saturday.

The first day of the tournament was a tough one. They let a comfortable first half lead slip away against Hyde Park and lost 50-59.  Schyler Hallberg led the scoring with 17 points.  The second game against the Cedar Ridge Freshman team fell apart in the fourth quarter and they lost 48-56. Kevin Owen led the scoring with 20 points.   The size difference and turnovers seemed to be the difference as they struggled with the press.  They came back Saturday with a great game against the Cedar Park Freshman team, winning 45-28; Dominic Kress leading scores with 13 points, followed closely by Schyler Hallberg with 12 points.

“The two Thursday losses were great learning experiences for the team and the boys corrected those mistakes, which is reflected in Saturday’s win. We are doing a better job with our pressure defenses and we look to carry that momentum into our next game against Milano. The team is really pulling together through the adversity and we look to end this difficult 5 game stretch on a positive note at Milano HS on Friday.” – Coach Alvarez

Monday, December 12, 2011 is bring your own device day at Savio.  We want all students, teachers and staff to bring their own laptop, smartphone, iPad, Kindle or whatever it is you use, so that Savio can test its wireless connection.  We are going to give everyone a temporary wireless password, and at the end of D-block, students will test the strength and speed of Savio’s wireless connection.  Students, teachers and staff will be given a “scavenger hunt” to work through so we can test the wireless connection with everyone in the school on at the same time.

As a bonus, everyone that brings their own device and participates will be allowed to dress down.  The temporary wireless password will be disabled after lunch.
