A Legacy of Giving held its second annual Day of Service on Wednesday, November 24th at the Capital Area Food Bank. The Day of Service is the culmination of The Drive, a student-run food and clothing drive that Savio participated in during the month of November. A Legacy of Giving’s 35 schools have been collecting food and coats to address the social concerns of hunger, poverty and homelessness. During the Day of Service, students from each of the 35 schools participated in unloading the contents of the POD: the food went to the Capital Area Food Bank and the coats went into Jack Brown vans to be cleaned before being donated to Coats for Kids. Savio brought along 11 students to unload the contents of our POD. We impressed many people at the Day of Service with our pod that was filled with cans! Thank you so much to all the families for helping! It was a huge success!

St. Dominic Savio is happy to report that the school has been granted a Charter in the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. “The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and Portuguese and is sponsored by the American Association of
Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and to promote a continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies.

Any secondary school student who has maintained an honor average in the study of Spanish or Portuguese for a minimum of three semesters and is in the 10th grade or higher is eligible.  Definition of “honor grade” is left to the discretion of the individual sponsor but it should be remembered that the SHH is an honor society for those students of high academic achievement” (http://www.sociedadhonorariahispanica.org).

St. Dominic Savio’s Charter will be called the Beato José Sánchez del Río Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. Sra. Pojman is the advisor.

To St. Dominic Savio Students and Ms. Berglund,

A huge thank you for participating in A Legacy of Giving’s Drive for coats and cans. Thanks to the 35 schools that took part in the Drive, the Capital Area Food Bank will be able to serve 46,670 meals to hungry and homeless individuals in Central Texas. Think about that for a minute. What a tremendous impact you’ve made! By giving time, talent, and treasure, you’ve helped give approximately $223,600 in economic value to your local community.

And now for your specific school results…St. Dominic Savio students contributed a whopping 3,000 pounds of food which translates into 2,400 meals. (Of all 35 Legacy schools, you had the third largest collection of cans! This news will be posted on our website.) You also collected 161 coats that will keep children warm this winter. Congratulations, philanthropists, on a job extremely well done! And a very special and heartfelt thank you to Ms. Berglund, a teacher who clearly inspires students to change their world.

Ms. Shana Burg
Academic Program Director
